The Flavian Amphitheatre, universally known as the Colosseum, is certainly the most impressive monument built under the Roman Empire. It is considered one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and Roman engineering. the Colosseum was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as mock sea battles, animal fights, re-enactments of battles and executions. It was also the place where many Christian Catholics have been martyred.
The Palatine is the first of the Seven historic Hills of Rome: here, according to the legend, Romulus founded the city that would become the ruler of the world. From the I century BC, Roman emperors started to built their palaces on the Palatine Hill.
The Roman forum was the centre of Roman public life for over a millennium from the late VII C. BC. This small area has been crucial in the history of the world.
The Carcer Tullianum or Mamertine (so called during the medieval period) was a prison located in the Roman Forum in Ancient Rome. It was the maximum security prison under the Roman Empire, and has been a place of Christian worship. Legend goes that St. Peter was imprisoned there before his martyrdom.
