Brindisi Airport (IATA CODE: BDS), or Salento Airport, is the airport in Puglia that connects the city of Brindisi and Salento with various domestic and international destinations. The airport is about 6 km from Brindisi and about 35 km from Lecce.
It was built in the 1920s with a single military runway, which soon began to be used exclusively for commercial purposes with a flight from Brindisi to Rome. From 1943 to 1947, due to World War II, the airport's activities were suspended.
During the postwar period, a new flight to Catania was added, and subsequently, flights expanded to destinations in the Middle East and Milan. In recent years, the airport has been modernized and expanded with various works. Thanks to low-cost airlines, it has seen a significant increase in air traffic and has established connections with important national and European airports.
In 2009, the airport surpassed the one-million-passenger mark for the first time, growing by 10.9% in passenger numbers, with 1,082,423 passengers to be exact.
Since 2010, Brindisi Airport has been a Ryanair base. That same year, the airport's name was changed from Papola Casale to Salento Airport.
