HISTORY:
Aviation activities of Malpensa Airport dates back more than 100 years ago. The first with Gianni Caproni and Giovanni Agusta that flew their Caproni Ca.1, an experimental biplane built in Italy in 1910. At the end of World War II, some manufacturers and politicians of the area restored the airfield to facilitate the industrial activities of Alto Milanese region. Malpensa's commercial activities started in November 1948, as “Aeroporto Città di Busto Arsizio”, and the first direct air link to New York was made in 1950. In 1952, the operator's name was changed to Società Esercizi Aeroportuali S.p.A (SEA). In 1960, with the opening of the new Linate runway, all domestic and European flights were transferred to Milan Linate airport. As a consequence of this measure, Milan Malpensa airport was used just for intercontinental links, with flights to North and South America. In 1985, SEA prepared a new airport master plan for the reorganisation of the Milan airport system. The plan was called "Malpensa 2000". Malpensa airport was re-opened in 1998.
