MALTA AIRPORT

Malta International Airport is the only airport that serves the Maltese Islands and connects them to a large number of European and international destinations through both scheduled and low cost flights including those operated by the flag carrier Air Malta.
Malta airport has only one terminal that serves over 6 million passengers a year.

HISTORY:
Malta’s first airport was constructed at Ta’ Qali, and at Hal Far thereafter. The two airfields were severely damaged during World War II, and therefore, the construction of a new passenger air terminal at Luqa was decided in 1956 while the grand opening was in 1958.
Over the years air traffic increased significantly and for this reason a new and longer runway was built in 1977. The numerous renovations were not enough therefore the new administration decided to close the old Luqa passenger terminal and to build a new air terminal in the town of Gudja which became fully operational on 25 March 1992.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT LINKS TO AND FROM MALTA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT:
Malta International Airport is located between Luqa and Gudja, around 10km from Malta’s capital, La Valletta.
The Maltese Islands are not large that makes it easy to get around Malta by bus or by renting a car and it is also the reason why the train is no longer used and the subway does not exist.

Bus from Malta International Airport to city centre:
There are four express lines:
• X1: from Malta International Airport to Cirkewwa
• X2: from Malta International Airport to San Giljan
• X3: from Malta International Airport to Bugibba
• X4: from Malta International Airport to Birzebugga
All bus services operate from Monday to Sunday and tickets can be purchased on board. A single ticket costs €1.50 during winter and €2 during summer.
Terravision operates a shuttle bus service between Malta Airport and the main tourist destinations on the island: Bugibba Qawra, San Julians and Sliema. The shuttle bus service will pick up passengers from/to their chosen address.

By taxi:
Taxi fares vary depending on the destination to reach. The maximum rate is approximately €30 (excluding supplements).
You can buy pre-paid tickets in the Welcomers Hall.

SECURITY CHECKS:
Once you've completed the check-in process be prepared to place handbags, jackets, belts, wallets and metal objects in the tray before security screening.
The airport authority puts no restriction on the number of hand luggage items but each airline has different rules.
Any liquid must be in containers with a maximum capacity of 100ml and must be placed in a resealable, transparent plastic bag.
Further information about banned and restricted items are available on the Malta International Airport official website.
