Take the Terravision bus that connects Fiumicino Airport with Termini Station, the main interchange of the capital's 3 metro lines, strategically located in the centre of Rome. The bus from Fiumicino Airport to Termini Station takes about 50 minutes. Once at Rome Termini Station, you can take the metro (line A, line B, line C) or one of the many bus lines that terminate in the big square in front of the station. To get from Termini Station to the Vatican: take the metro (Line A, direction: "Battistini") and get off at the sixth stop "Ottaviano - San Pietro" or at the seventh stop "Cipro - Musei Vaticani". Alternatively, you can take bus lines 40 or 64. To get from Termini to Colosseo: take the metro (Line B, direction "Laurentina") and get off at the second stop "Colosseo". To get from Termini to Piazza di Spagna/ Piazza del Popolo: take the metro (Line A, direction: "Battistini") for 3/4 stops.
The Ciampino International Airport is, after Fiumicino, the second largest airport in the city of Rome. In 2017 the number of passengers that used this airport reached a record 6 million which, although well below the Fiumicino numbers (40 million passengers in 2017) makes Ciampino one of the 10 most important airports in Italy. Ciampino is still a "military airport open to authorized civilian traffic", in fact, ¼ of its extension is reserved for military installations. Ciampino airport has a single runway unlike Fiumicino, which has 4.
HISTORY: Inagurated in 1916, it was used as a military base for airships and operated exclusively as a military airport until the 1930s when it was also opened to civilian traffic. Ciampino airport was Rome’s principal gateway until 1961 when, with the inauguration of the new airport of Fiumicino, most of the air traffic was diverted to this modern structure. In 2001, with the ingress of low-cost airlines Ciampino airport experienced an increase in traffic, as the number of daily flights increased fivefold.
Today, the airport has a single terminal for departures and arrivals. The departure terminal opens at 04:00 and closes at 00:00, whilst the arrivals terminal opens at 05:30 and closes at 00:30.
The airport connects Rome with the main European destinations but also hosts some low cost flights to intercontinental destinations such as Morocco.
LOCATION AND CONNECTIONS: Ciampino airport is located in the outskirts towards the southeast of the capital, about 12 km from the historic center of Rome. Although in recent decades the area has been intensely urbanized, the only direct connections to the city center are those via bus (travel time: approximately 40 minutes). As an alternative, there is a train that connects Ciampino town with Termini and Tiburtina stations (20 minutes) but considering the frequency of the bus to the center of Ciampino and the frequency of the trains, the bus is the most convenient option.
Taxis from Ciampino airport to the center of Rome (Aurelian Walls) cost € 30 plus a luggage supplement (the first suitcase is free, but for each extra piece of baggage you have to pay € 1).
From Ciampino to Fiumicino: the fastest connection between Ciampino and Fiumicino is by taxi and has a flat rate fare of € 50. The only alternatives, whether by bus or train, include a stop at the Roma Termini station.
From Ciampino airport to Civitavecchia Port: The cheapest option is to take a bus from Ciampino to Roma Termini and then a regional train from Termini to Civitavecchia, (departure every 20/30 minutes, price of €5). Alternatively, the fixed fare for a taxi is €120.
SECURITY CONTROLS: As in most international airports, all passengers must undergo security checks after the check-in process and before entering the boarding area. During busy periods, passport control and baggage X-ray scanning of luggage can cause significant delays and long waiting times. We therefore recommend passengers to be at the boarding gates at least 1 hour before the flight boarding commencement. Most airlines flying from / to Ciampino allow passengers to carry a single cabin baggage plus a bag containing all purchases made within the duty free area of the airport. This policy, as well as the size of carry-on baggage, may differ from one airline to another, so we suggest consulting with your carrier (for example, Ryanair has set a 10 kg weight limit and 55 cm x 40cm x 20cm size limit for hand luggage). It is important to remember that passengers departing from Italian airports can only carry a limited amount of liquids (a maximum of 10, 100 ml containers) in their carry-on luggage, whether this is drinks, perfumes, cosmetics. This restriction also applies to gels and pastes. Containers with liquids must be transported separately, inside a transparent, sealed, airtight bag of a size not exceeding 1 litre. The only exceptions allowed are medication (if accompanied by relevant prescription), antiallergic foods (only the amount absolutely necessary for the trip), baby milk (0-36 months) or liquids bought in the duty-free zone after passing through the security controls.
