Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (IATA code: AMS) is the main airport of the Netherlands and one of the 5 most important airports in Europe, along with Madrid, London-Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Frankfurt. The airport is located in the municipality of Haarlemmermeer, around 20 km south of Amsterdam.
Thanks to its 6 tracks, the Schiphol is one of the biggest airports in the world: there are 5 main tracks and the sixth one used mainly for non-scheduled flights.
The airport is the hub of many other international and intercontinental airlines, including the Dutch flag carrier KLM. There are also more than 100 low cost airline companies that operate at the Schiphol Airport, connecting more than 300 destinations worldwide.
Despite the huge dimensions of the airport, there is only one passenger terminal arranged on several levels. The airline companies from all over the world operate in 3 Departures areas and 4 Arrivals areas.
The airport offersvarious passenger services, i.e. free wifi, luggage storage even for long periods, relaxation areas open to passengers, VIP rooms reserved for business customers, paid showers, as well as numerous dining areas with bars and restaurants, shops and even an art gallery and a library. Amsterdam was in fact the first city to have a library at the airport. Here you can chave a look at newspapers and magazines and read books for free (in English and Dutch). Ipads and touch screens are also available and free to use for the passengers. The library is located is located along Holland Boulevard, between lounges 2 and 3.
Inside the Schiphol Airport, right after the security control area, there is also a park (Airport Park) where it is possible to do some sport or relax listening to birds sing, while waiting for the flight
LUGGAGE DEPOSIT
The luggage storage is a very useful service provided by Amsterdam Airport: you can leave your luggage or your personal items of any size.
If you would like to leave standard shape and dimensions items, it is possible to use the "Baggage Lockers" for a maximum of 7 days and then pay at the time of withdrawal with both debit and credit card.
As for the large or non-standard size luggage, it is possible to deposit this kind of items in the Baggage Depot which is located in the basement between Arrivals 1 and Arrivals 2 area.
The office is open every day 24/7. The passengers are able to safely and securely pay with credit card or debit card. The prices of the Baggage Depot services are:
from 1 to 7 days: 7 euros per bag per day
from 8 to 30 days: 6 euros per bag per day
SECURITY CONTROL
In order to pass through security control easier and faster, you can follow these simple steps:
• present yourself at the metal detector with your boarding pass and document in your hand
• do not wear metal objects
• your liquids need to be in 100ml containers, inside a clear plastic bag
The following items have to be placed in the special metal detector trays:
• Jacket, scarves and gloves
• Belts with metal buckles
• Keys, watches, jewellery or other metallic jewellery
• Cell phones and other electronic devices
• Laptop (it has to be inserted in a separate tray and without the protective case)
• Wallet
• Shoes
• If you are traveling with children, the stroller which must be folded
